Currents December 2018

Did you know that the Great Lakes are the biggest freshwater source in the world? Lake Erie is the most productive for fishing of all the Great Lakes. Your support helps make our streams clean, clear and healthy so they can support this complex ecosystem. By donating to PCS, you help us reach our goals of restoring rivers that lead to Lake Erie beaches that promote fishable and swimmable conditions for generations.

BillDavisAGMThank you to everyone who attended and supported our 12th Annual General Meeting (AGM) that was held on #GivingTuesday, November 27th.  We hosted the AGM at the beautiful Nederhouser Community Hall in Olander Park. Michael’s catered the event and we are still working on finishing the leftovers!  Over 30 people attended, helping us review our accomplishments from the past year and looking forward to what we can do in the next.  PCS Staff presented a recap of our annual program results and thanked our volunteers and financial supporters who enabled us to have both the highest number of volunteers and marine debris removed.

The star of the show was our 2018 Clean Stream Partner Award.  It was our honor to present Bill Davis, Volunteer Manager and ZooTeen Coordinator at the Toledo Zoo, with the award.  Bill Davis has been involved with Clean Your Streams Day since 2002!  He has supported our other annual programs, such as Get the Lead Out, CYS 365, Glass City Marathon, and Youth Patch Day, along with helping us clean collected fishing line to prep for recycling. Thank you, Bill, for all you have done to promote environmental conservation in our community and promoting stewardship of our water resources in younger generations!

The highlight of the Annual General Meeting was the awards ceremony.  Clean Your Streams Day Challenge Award Winners were recognized for their efforts.  Representatives from the Toledo Zoo Teens, Toledo Early College High School, Ohio EPA, The Mannik & Smith Group, and First Solar all accepted awards on their organization’s behalf.  Additionally, a 2019 Board of Directors election was held.  Current PCS Treasurer Joan King and Board Member Denise Fonner were unanimously re-elected for another two-year term.  Bill Buri was a new nominee to the PCS Board and he graciously accepted the position.  Thank you to our 2018 Board Members who help guide our organization to increase our volunteer base and help reach fundraising goals.

ToledoWalleyeDuring the winter months, we are still hard at work to improve water quality in Northwest Ohio. Our partnership with the Huntington Center as their concessions crew allows us to receive half of that event’s proceeds.  These unrestricted funds help us grow our programs, such as Clean Your Streams Day, Get the Lead Out, Youth Patch Day, and more.  Volunteers are required to be at least 16 years of age and at least 19 to serve alcohol.  We need a list of registrants at least one week prior to each event to make sure we are fully staffed and for entrance into the arena.  If you would like to donate your time towards clean, clear, and safe water without getting wet, please visit our online signup sheet or call our office at (419) 874-0727.  Volunteers must bring a signed liability sheet and read our Volunteer Guidelines.

2018resultsAs we near the end of the year and the beginning of a new one, we reflect on what we have been able to do for our waterways in 2018.  The results from this past year are a testament to our volunteer’s commitment to clean, clear, and safe water.  Our Get the Lead Out program, Clean Your Streams Day, and CYS 365 all had the highest volunteer turnout in recent years.  Over 1,500 volunteers came out to our annual programs this year to work for improved water quality.  We are amazed by just how many people of all ages, interests, and backgrounds, were willing to get down and dirty for cleaner waterways in our area.  With increasing media negativity about the fate of our rivers, streams, and Lake Erie, it is inspiring to see so many people that are taking positive action towards some of the serious issues facing our waterways.

We are also proud to announce that this has been a record-breaking year for marine debris removal.  Clean Your Streams Day 22 has set the bar for total tires collected and pounds of trash removed.  In total, 35,573 pounds of marine debris were removed from the waterways of the greater Toledo area.  306 tires were also removed and recycled through our partnership with Bridgestone Tires4Ward program.  As exciting as these statistics are, it solidifies the fact that there is more work to be done!  We hope that you will continue to support PCS in 2019 as we work to support our water resources.  Thank you to all those who made a real difference for our waterways this past year!
