Reel in and Recycle

Did you know that the Great Lakes are the biggest freshwater source in the world? Lake Erie is the most productive for fishing of all the Great Lakes. Your support helps make our streams clean, clear and healthy so they can support this complex ecosystem. By donating to PCS, you help us reach our goals of restoring rivers that lead to Lake Erie beaches that promote fishable and swimmable conditions for generations.

Reel in and Recycle

Discarded fishing line has become a serious issue in waterways around the greater Toledo area. To combat this, Partners for Clean Streams coordinates the installation of Fishing Line Recycling Bins to safely collect, track, and recycle discarded fishing line. The bins encourage anglers to dispose of their fishing line cleanly and properly, thereby decreasing entanglement of animals, increasing aesthetics, and improving recreation along the river for everyone.

Property owners, volunteers, and organizations are working together to host and maintain the Fishing Line Recycling Bins in high traffic fishing areas. But we need your help! We are currently looking for locations to Host-a-Bin, groups to Adopt-a-Bin, and organizations to Sponsor-a-Bin. We need dedicated groups or individuals to Adopt a Fishing Line Recycling Bin and help track and collect the line that is left in the bins. The Toledo Community Foundation, NOAA Marine Debris Foundation, Dominion Energy, and The Western Reserve Land Conservancy funded this program and it is great for groups or organizations looking for service projects. To get involved, fill out the correct form, and return it to PCS. Together, we can reduce the amount of harmful fishing line left in the rivers!

Thank you to the Toledo Zoo's ZooTeens who not only helped PCS collect the line, but sorted and cleaned it as well!  The fishing line can now be sent to Berkley Conservation Institute to be recycled and repurposed.  Thanks for all your hard work!
