Looking for a service project that educates your community and promotes healthy waterways? Sign up for our Storm Drain Marking program this spring or summer! Volunteers 10+ are invited to take part in this program in which storms drains are marked with the phrase “Drains are for Rain – Flows to Waterway,” and educational information is distributed to neighbors. Storm drains are designed for only rain water as they flow, untreated, directly into our streams, rivers, and Lake Erie. Last year, we had 71 volunteers who marked 742 storm drains in the greater Toledo area and distributed 2,424 informational flyers throughout the community. This program is flexible and can be coordinated through PCS and local municipalities. We will provide all the supplies and facilitate the program. Contact PCS if you are interested in helping us improve local water quality and encourage proper storm drain usage.

Spring is just around the corner and that means it’s time for spring cleaning! PCS has partnered with our pals at the Toledo Zoo for their new “Spring into Action” program! We will be hosting a series of cleanups where ZooTeens, their family, and all other volunteers are welcome to help us remove the debris that has accumulated along our waterways during the winter months. For six weeks in May and June, PCS will be hosting a series of cleanups at specific sites that could use some TLC. Check out our calendar for upcoming information about dates and locations. “Spring into Action” will kick off on Earth Day, April 20th, followed by the Toledo Zoo’s “Party for the Planet” on Saturday, April 27th and end June 9th. And watch for other volunteer opportunities through the Toledo Zoo and area environmental partners. Spring into action with us and make an impact on the waterways in our area.

If you haven’t already registered for the 43rd Mercy Health Glass City Marathon – you’re running out of time! You can sign up to run for the Green Team this year and as a thank-you, Partners for Clean Streams is offering a limited amount of race comps for the registration fee for any race (full, half, relay). If you have already registered, but want to show your support for our sustainability mission at the marathon, you can create a race fundraiser that directly goes to our organization. We use these funds to support our water quality improvement programs and protect the streams and rivers that the runners cross during the marathon. Contact PCS by phone (419) 874-0727 or email [email protected] for more information about the race registration comp. Do something good for yourself and the planet during Earth month, and run for the Green Team!
If you want to be involved in the marathon without committing to running 26.2 miles, consider volunteering with PCS as the “Green Team.” We will be recycling thousands of pounds of materials as we strive to make the marathon as sustainable as possible. This is a great way for groups looking for service hours to make a huge impact during Earth month. Or, cheer on your Glass City Marathon runner as you race to recycle as much as possible!

Thank you to all the participants who came out to the University of Toledo’s Lake Erie Center on Sunday, March 3rd for our 17th Annual Patch Day Workshop! 59 2nd– 5th graders joined local water quality professionals for six hands-on activities relating to the theme of “Habitats & Water.” At the conclusion of the day, each participant received a blue and white Partnering for Clean Streams patch to encourage them to become active stewards of our waterways. We hope this program was both educational and informational for the youth and their parents! We all have a role to play in protecting our waterways and Patch Day is a great way to learn about what everyone can do to make a difference, no matter what age. We welcome all participants to continue their conservation journey and fulfill specific merit requirements by volunteering with us for our spring and summer programs including: Glass City Marathon, Storm Drain Marking, CYS 365, Get the Lead Out, and more!
We would also like to thank our presenters who made the Workshop possible. Jamie Kochensparger with Lucas Co. Soil & Water Conservation District, Beth Landers with Wood Co. Soil & Water Conservation District, Lauren Rush with the City of Perrysburg, Laura and Jason Guerard with Black Swamp Bird Observatory, Rachel Lohner and UT graduate students with Lake Erie Center, and Andrea Beard with the City of Oregon all hosted unique habitat-related activities during the rotations. Thanks for being a great Partner for clean streams!
