Currents June 2019

Did you know that the Great Lakes are the biggest freshwater source in the world? Lake Erie is the most productive for fishing of all the Great Lakes. Your support helps make our streams clean, clear and healthy so they can support this complex ecosystem. By donating to PCS, you help us reach our goals of restoring rivers that lead to Lake Erie beaches that promote fishable and swimmable conditions for generations.

cys23stdFamilies, friends, and co-workers – join us on Saturday, September 21st for the 23rd Annual Clean Your Streams Day!  Clean Your Streams Day will take place at seven kickoff locations in the greater Toledo area including: Olander Park, Middlegrounds Metropark, Perrysburg Three Meadows Park, the University of Toledo, Monroe Street United Methodist Church, Side Cut Metropark, and Oregon Municipal Building.  All volunteers will be invited to celebrate this community-wide cleanup at an Appreciation Picnic starting at noon with entertainment, a free lunch, t-shirt, and prizes.  Last year, we had the second highest amount of volunteers ever (1,109) and the highest amount of marine debris was removed (35,568 pounds) through everyone’s efforts on this day!  Let’s see if we can do even more for our waterways in 2019!  Registration for Clean Your Streams 23 is required and will be active in August.  Check out our website for pictures from last year and to learn more about why this program is so important in our community. Start forming your corporate, youth, collegiate, or organization teams today!

canoemobileflyerOur partners at TMACOG are bringing an innovative outreach event to the Toledo area this month – Canoemobile.  Canoemobile is a “floating classroom” through Wilderness Inquiry that targets under-served students through hands-on environmental education. They will be bringing their 24 foot-long canoes to get kids out on the water from June 26th– 28th.  Partners for Clean Streams will be one of the outreach partners who will host activities that engage these youth to connect with their local waterways.  Thank you to the Toledo Community Foundation for supporting our engagement! There will be three days of water quality education with community partners from Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful, Lucas Soil & Water Conservation District, The Mannik & Smith Group, Metroparks Toledo, National Museum of the Great Lakes, ODNR Scenic Rivers program, The Olander Park System, and the City of Toledo.  On Saturday, June 29th, Canoemobile will wrap up with a Watershed Festival from 11am – 3pm at Broadway Street Boat Launch.  The Watershed Festival is open to all public and will include food trucks, fun, and family-friendly activities!

sandpiperMark your calendars for the 5th Annual Water Quality Boat Cruise!  On Sunday, August 4th from 2-4pm, PCS and Lucas Soil & Water Conservation District will host this public event with local water quality presenters to educate about improvements and challenges facing our Maumee River Watershed.  Registration is required and will be available soon!
