Education Sustainable SummerSummer is a time to relax, get outside for some extra Vitamin D, and enjoy time out on the water. Especially in our corner of the world, water activities are abundant in the summertime with fishing and boating on Lake Erie and its tributaries. It’s important that we stay on top of keeping our waters clean, clear, and safe so that we may continue to enjoy these summers for generations to come!

Back in March, we shared some lawn care tips to prep for spring that you can read here. Making sure to follow through with those guidelines throughout these warmer months is a good step towards a sustainable summer! We want to share more tips with you on how you can enjoy all the summer has to offer and doing so in a greener way.

  • Energy conservation: Investing in energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs is a great way to ensure you’re not overconsuming energy (and paying a higher bill!) during warmer months. Unplugging electronics when not being used is another great way to conserve energy.
  • Water conservation: Noticing a leaky faucet? It’s important to address any leaks as soon as you notice them to prevent wasting water. Conserving water can also include implementing a rain barrel and using the collected water for watering plants. It is best to water your plants early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize evaporation.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!: A phrase that’s been used for over 50 years. You know it, we know it, so let’s keep doing it!
  • Sustainable Transportation: Summer is the perfect time for travel and vacations for many. Opting for more eco-friendly modes of transportation like trains and/or buses, walking or biking when possible, and utilizing public transportation over personal vehicles are great ways to enjoy a more sustainable summer vacation.
